Apothecaries Blood Angels

    Apothecaries Blood Angels
    Color and paint schemes

The project we just completed at Art-W Studio took us back to one of the most emblematic chapters of the Warhammer universe: the Horus Heresy. This time, we worked on a group of Apothecaries Blood Angels of the IX Legion, also known as the Sons of Sanguinius, expanding an army we had already worked with before. In total, there were six apothecaries and one Corbulo that were part of this expansion. From the assembly and conversion of the miniatures, following a detailed list of poses and parts provided by the client, to the final painting, each step was carefully planned to achieve an outstanding result.
The color scheme was the classic Blood Angels of that era: desaturated red armor with light orange touches, a combination that evokes the brutality and nobility of the legion. Corbulo, as a high-ranking apothecary, was treated with special care, standing out for wearing shoulder pads with an inverse pattern to the rest of the apothecaries, underlining his position in the hierarchy.
The setting of the bases is key in this project. Inspired by Baal, the home planet of the Bloody Angels, we opted for earthy textures of reddish tones, adding small dry bushes that reflect the arid and devastated landscape. In terms of painting, each miniature was worked on with advanced chipping techniques and osl light effects, achieving an ornate level in all details, from weapons to insignia. Overall, the miniatures not only perfectly complement the existing army, but also provide a visual narrative that connects with the epic story of Warhammer 30K.

Baal and his Warriors: Setting the Battle Grounds

This client first contacted us some time ago, when he was looking for a team specialized in painting and converting IX Legion miniatures. He was so satisfied with the initial work, that he did not hesitate to come back to us to continue with the expansion of his Sons of Sanguinius army. This time, the assignment was a group of apothecaries, including the legendary Corbulo, the highest rank among them.
From the beginning, he made it clear to us that he wanted to follow the same color scheme we had used previously: armor in desaturated red, with subtle illuminations highlighting the details of the figures. In addition, he had a very specific request: Córbulo’s shoulder pads were to have an inverted pattern with respect to the rest of the apothecaries, with a red background and white borders, while the rest of the specialists would have a white background with a red border.
The client also brought in additional resin and plastic pieces, indicating how he wanted each apothecary to have a unique pose. It was a highly customized project, with detailed conversions to accurately reflect his vision of the Apothecaries Blood Angels army, and we made sure to meet his expectations from the very beginning.

Expansion of the Sons of Sanguinius Army

We started the project with the assembly of the miniatures, following to the millimeter the client’s instructions for poses and conversions. The assembly process was meticulous, as we wanted to make sure that each apothecary had a unique pose, using the customized pieces that the client gave us. At the same time, we prepared the cork-textured bases that would represent the arid terrain of Baal.
Once assembled, we moved on to painting. We started with a desaturated red base color on the armor, respecting the army’s scheme, and applied wear effects with the chipping technique. Corbulo’s shoulder pads received special attention, making sure that the contrast with the rest of the apothecaries was evident. Details such as emblems, weapons and piping were carefully painted, using oil washes to highlight shadows and reliefs.
Throughout the entire process, we shared daily photos with the client, who was able to follow every stage of the project. From the light effects on the lenses to the decoration of the bases with dried bushes, the client was delighted with the progress, which made working on this project even more rewarding for us.
